We’re honored to announce that Professor Alex Kozulin, Director of International Research and Training at the Feuerstein Institute, has won the Outstanding Book Award from the Society of Professors of Education (SPE) for his book The Cultural Mind: The Sociocultural Theory of Learning. The award was conferred on April 26, 2025.
The SPE, originally known as the National Society of College Teachers of Education (chartered in 1902), rebranded in 1969 to its current name. This long-standing scholarly society recognizes influential works in education through a competitive selection process involving senior academics and global nominations.
The Cultural Mind is published by Cambridge University Press, the world’s oldest publishing house and part of the prestigious University of Cambridge. In 2025, SPE honored multiple titles from Cambridge University Press, including Kozulin’s, underscoring both the rigorous academic standards of the publisher and the international impact of the honored works.
The Society of Professors of Education Outstanding Book Award recognizes books that make an exceptional contribution to the field of education. Nominations are submitted by scholars across the U.S. and abroad and reviewed by a committee of senior educators.
The Cultural Mind, released in 2024 by Cambridge UP, explores how learning and cognition are deeply shaped by culture, tools, and social engagement—core principles shared by the Feuerstein Institute’s Center for Cognitive Advancement for all ages. This book not only furthers scholarly understanding but also offers actionable insights for educators, therapists, and policymakers worldwide.
Prof. Kozulin’s lifelong contributions to sociocultural theory and mediated learning experience are well known internationally. This award not only celebrates a pivotal piece of educational literature but also reflects the global impact of his work and our institute’s mission to promote transformative learning practices.
This award is a significant validation of Professor Kozulin’s pioneering work and a testament to our mission of advancing cognitive development through sociocultural theory. It further establishes our institute, based at the Center for Cognitive Advancement, as a global thought leader in education.
We extend our heartfelt congratulations to Prof. Kozulin for this well-deserved honor!
